What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal human response to uncertainty or perceived danger. When fear and worry are frequent, difficult to control, or interfere with everyday life, additional support may help. Anxiety disorders are common and treatable; they can affect children, teenagers, and adults. The Anxiety & Depression Association of America (ADAA) provides background on their prevalence and impact.

How anxiety can show up

Thoughts and emotions

Persistent worry, what-if spirals, difficulty tolerating uncertainty, dread, or feeling overwhelmed.

Body and sleep

Muscle tension, restlessness, a racing heart, fatigue, or trouble falling or staying asleep.

Relationships

Overthinking conversations, reassurance-seeking, withdrawing, or struggling to set boundaries.

Work and everyday life

Avoiding decisions, perfectionism, trouble concentrating, procrastination, or feeling constantly “on.”

Anxiety symptoms may overlap with trauma responses, ADHD, depression, medical conditions, or high stress. Understanding the full context matters.

OPTIONAL SELF-CHECK · ABOUT TWO MINUTES

How much has anxiety been affecting you?

Our GAD-7 questionnaire asks about seven common anxiety symptoms over the last two weeks and provides an immediate score from 0 to 21. It includes an explanation and a way to discuss your results with a therapist. It is a screening tool—not a diagnosis.

How therapy can help

Therapy provides a place to understand anxiety without judgment and practice changes that fit your life. Depending on your needs, care may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), identifying thought patterns, gradually reducing avoidance, mindfulness, relaxation strategies, values-based action, or skills for navigating uncertainty and relationships. Your therapist can work collaboratively with prescribing clinicians when appropriate.

You do not need to wait until anxiety is “bad enough.” If it is affecting your comfort, relationships, sleep, or daily functioning, it is reasonable to seek support.

Small steps you can experiment with

Notice the worry loop

Ask, “Is there something I can act on now, or is my mind asking for certainty I cannot have?”

Return to the present

Ground through your senses or slow your breathing in a way that feels comfortable.

Make room for uncertainty

Try one manageable step without waiting until you feel 100% sure.

Practice compassionate language

Replace “Why can’t I handle this?” with “This is difficult, and I can choose my next step.”

Frequently asked questions

Is anxiety the same as generalized anxiety disorder?

No. Anxiety is a common experience, while generalized anxiety disorder involves a persistent pattern of difficult-to-control worry along with other symptoms and impairment. A professional assessment can clarify the difference.

Can I have anxiety and ADHD or PTSD?

Yes. Symptoms may coexist or overlap, which is one reason a comprehensive evaluation is more useful than an online score alone.

Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?

No. You can seek help for worry, stress, and emotional overwhelm without having a formal diagnosis.

More support. Less living on high alert.

At Mosaic Clinic, therapy is collaborative, practical, and centered on what matters to you.
